Abstract
This work examines the development of Conservation Agriculture (CA) in Algeria through two complementary components. The first consists of a large-scale field survey conducted among cereal farmers in the province of Sétif, one of the main cereal-producing regions and among the earliest adopters of direct seeding and reduced tillage. The second involves a systematic review of scientific literature, synthesizing experimental evidence on CA in Algerian arid and semi-arid zones.CA adoption in Sétif remains limited, but farmers who practice it report lower weed pressure, integrated weed management, and more diversified cropping compared with conventional tillage. Wider diffusion is hindered by lack of institutional support, limited training, and insufficient access to specialized equipment. Overall, both field survey and Systematic review confirm that CA offers significant agronomic and environmental benefits and represents a promising pathway for sustainable agriculture in Algeria.
